Using a NanoTube, submicron resolution tomography can be obtained by placing the sample very close to the source to generate a large geometric magnification. However, contrast must also be obtained. In this publication, the group in Munich has developed a specific staining method where the lead-containing stain gives strong attenuation to the X-rays. This enabled three-dimensional visualization of cellular and sub-cellular structures in the sample, and an example shows the microanatomy of a mouse liver lobule sample imaged using a NanoTube.
