Redefining the X-ray tube

Excillum is the company behind the world’s brightest X-ray tube. The MetalJet is based on the unique metal-jet technology where the traditional solid anode of X-ray tubes is replaced with a jet of liquid metal.

The metal-jet technology was invented by our company’s founders in the year 2000. Today, we offer a growing range of the MetalJet and NanoTube X-ray sources based on our key technologies, to customers all over the world.

We are headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, where we have R&D, engineering and production all in house. We cover the world with our own sales and service & support teams, and via a network of OEM partners and distributors.

Our story

2000

The invention

It started already in year 2000 with the invention of the liquid-metal-jet-anode principle by Prof. Hans Hertz and Ph.D. student Oscar Hemberg. The technology was then further refined by Ph.D. students Mikael Otendal and Tomi Tuohimaa. At that time the four founders-to-be were affiliated with KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

2007

Excillum AB founded

The foundations of the metal-jet principle were now demonstrated and Excillum was founded to bring the technology to the market. With some investment capital on board, a few more engineers could be added to the team to explore and refine the technology further, focusing on developing the first product, the Excillum MetalJet D1.
2011

First market – X-ray diffraction

The first system integration was for X-ray diffraction through a close cooperation with Bruker-AXS and by then sales started to grow, as well as the team though still small. With some further development, the next generation MetalJet, D2, was launched.

2016

New product launch

A first step towards being a multiple-products company was taken with the launch of a new product, the Excillum NanoTube. The NanoTube has unparalleled possibilities for X-ray imaging with true resolution of 150 nm lines and spaces, and with the unique feature to internally measure and report the current spot size.
2018

Ready for greatness

The team is expanding and ambition is growing. Directly and together with multiple system partners, we are reaching for new geographical markets and application segments as well as consolidating our position on the market as the brightest X-ray source supplier available for home labs.
2020

Anniversary

It’s now 20 years since the invention of the liquid-metal jet anode. The technology has been further refined through the years and today there is a large number of MetalJets installed to the benefit of customers all over the world.
We also launch a new generation high-resolution X-ray tubes, the Excillum NanoTube N2 series. The NanoTube N2 enables industry-leading 150 nm resolution in geometric-magnification X-ray imaging systems, and with an imaging speed surpassing its predecessor’s, the NanoTube N1.
