The MetalJet technology replaces the traditional solid anode of X-ray tube with a jet of liquid metal.
Thereby, the achievable power-level is no longer limited by when the anode melts.
It’s already molten!

The MetalJet X-ray source can then be integrated into one of our partners’ systems or constitute the base of a custom set-up solution.

Our Story

2000

It started already in year 2000 with the invention of the liquid-metal-jet-anode principle by Prof. Hans Hertz and Ph.D. student Oscar Hemberg. The technology was then further refined by Ph.D. students Mikael Otendal and Tomi Tuohimaa. At that time the four founders-to-be were affiliated with KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

2007

Excillum AB Founded

The foundations of the MetalJet principle were now demonstrated and Excillum was founded to bring the technology to the market. With some investment capital on board, a few more engineers could be added to the team to explore and refine the technology further, focusing on developing the first product, MetalJet D1.

2011

First Market – X-ray Diffraction

First system integration is for X-ray Diffraction through a close cooperation with Bruker-AXS and by then sales started to grow, as well as the team though still small. With some further development, the next generation MetalJet, D2 was launched.

2016

New Product Launch

A first step towards being a multiple-products company is taken with the launch of the new product, NanoTube, with unparalleled possibilities for X-ray imaging with true resolution of 150 nm lines and spaces and with the unique feature to internally measure and report the current spot size.

2018

Ready for greatness!

Team is expanding and ambition is growing. Directly and together with multiple system partners, we are reaching for new geographical markets and application segments as well as consolidating our position on the market as the brightest X-ray source supplier available for home labs.

Björn Hansson

CEO
Björn holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from KTH (2003). He was a co-founder of Innolite AB and previous work include Group Manager at Acreo AB, Kista, Sweden and Senior Scientist at Cymer, Inc., San Diego, USA.

Joakim Flodin

CFO
As CFO Joakim is responsible for finance and administration within Excillum. Joakim holds a B.Sc. in Business Administration from Linköping University (1996). Previous positions include, CFO at Zaark, CFO at Proximion Fiber Systems and other financial positions in start-ups and large corporations.

Mikael Otendal

Head of Purchasing and Production
Mikael is responsible for Excillum’s production as well as procurement, quality assurance, key vendors, and shipping. Mikael is one of the co-founders of Excillum and got his Ph.D. in Applied Physics at KTH in 2006, specializing in the fluid dynamics of high-speed metal jets in vacuum.

Cecilia Kröjs

HR Manager
Cecilia is responsible for developing and implementing HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy. With experience from small and medium sized fast growing tech companies Cecilia brings a combination of skills in HR and communication. Cecilia has formal education from Bachelor program in Human Resources, Stockholm University.

Hans Hertz

Chairman of the Board
Prof. Hans Hertz is one of the co-founders of Excillum and also a co-founder of Jettec AB and Innolite AB as well as scientific advisor to several companies.

Hans is leading the Biomedical and X-ray Physics group at the Dept. of Applied Physics at KTH, and has published ~100 scientific articles and holds 15 patents.

Oscar Hemberg

Oscar is one of the co-founders of Excillum and also a co-founder of Innolite AB. Oscar currently serves as Group CEO at Flexworks, Hong Kong. Previous work includes General Manager of Research Division, JMAR Inc., San Diego.

Oscar holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Thomas Eklund

Thomas is an independent Advisor, Consultant and Board Member. He currently serves as chairman of the Board of Moberg Pharma AB, Swevet AB and Itrim AB. Member of the board of Boule Diagnostics AB, Memira AB, Biotage AB and Rodebjer Form AB.

Thomas holds an MBA from Stockholm School of Economics.

Magnus Ryde

Magnus Ryde is a renowned semiconductor industry and high-tech. venture professional. He currently serves as chairman board of SOL Voltaics AB. Furthermore, he is also member of the board GLO AB and Ekahau.

Magnus is a graduate of Linköping University of Sweden and he received his MS of Industrial Engineering and Executive MBA degrees from Stanford University.

Christian W. Jansson

Christian is chairman of the board of Random Walk Imaging AB, Collodial Resources AB, Carl Westin AB, Skopik & Lohn AB and member of the board of Europris ASA, Accumbo AB, Obicor Medical AB and Wyndit Inc.

Christian holds a MBA and an honorary doctorate in economics from the University of Lund.

Finn Rausing

Finn is a member of the Tetra Laval Group Board as well as of the boards of Alfa Laval AB, DeLaval Holding AB, EQT AB and Swede Ship Marine AB.

He holds an LL.B. from University of Lund, Sweden and an MBA from INSEAD, France.

All Excillum’s X-ray sources are compliant with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU,  RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006. Excillum’s products are classified as a sub-assembly (partly completed machinery) and so not CE-marked and therefore excluded from the EMC directive 2014/30/EU.

All our products are compliant to the following standards:

  • EN ISO 12100:2010 – Safety of machinery – General principles for design – Risk assessment and risk reduction
  • EN ISO 13849-1:2015 – Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems – Part 1: General principles for design
  • EN 61010-1:2010 – Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use — Part 1: General requirements

Some of our products have been verified in a third-party test house for the standard EN 61010-1:2010.

In accordance with RoHS and REACH, we are investigating all parts/components in our sources to know if they contain any of the hazardous substances that are stated in RoHS and in Article 33 of the REACH regulation. Our X-ray sources contain Lead (Pd) (CAS Number: 7439-92-1) with a concentration above REACH and RoHS requirements however, they are permissible under RoHS exemptions.
